Common questions about WordPress plugins, performance, security, and our recommendations.
There's no fixed limit. Quality matters far more than quantity. A site running 30 well-coded plugins can outperform one running 8 bloated ones. Most well-built WordPress sites use between 15 and 25 plugins. Focus on removing anything you don't actively need rather than chasing a magic number.
Only badly-coded plugins slow sites down. Well-built plugins add negligible overhead. The real culprits are usually a small number of heavy offenders such as page builders, slider plugins, social-media widgets, or anything that loads its own JavaScript on every page. A speed audit can identify exactly which plugins are hurting your Core Web Vitals.
Free plugins from the official WordPress.org repository are generally safe. Every submission is reviewed and the active install count, ratings, and last-updated date give you a good indication of trust. Avoid free plugins from random sites or "nulled" premium plugins from torrent sites: those are the most common source of WordPress malware infections.
We recommend Rank Math for almost every site we build. It's free, faster than Yoast, and includes schema markup, breadcrumbs, redirections, and 404 monitoring out of the box. The interface is genuinely usable. Both the free and Pro versions outperform the Yoast equivalents for most use cases.
Elementor is the most popular page builder for good reason. It's flexible, well-supported, and the free version is genuinely capable. The downside is performance: Elementor sites need careful optimisation to hit good Core Web Vitals scores. For showcase or marketing sites where visual editing matters, it's an excellent choice. For performance-critical sites we usually recommend hand-coded templates instead.
For most business sites we recommend Gravity Forms. It's fast, accessible, has excellent spam protection via reCAPTCHA and honeypots, and integrates with virtually every CRM and email marketing platform. WPForms and Contact Form 7 are also fine choices. CF7 is free and lightweight if you only need a basic enquiry form.
Always take a full backup before updating, then update on a staging site first if possible. Never enable auto-updates for major plugin versions on a production site. Only enable auto-updates for minor and security updates. If you don't have a staging environment, our maintenance plans handle plugin updates monthly with rollback protection in case anything breaks.
Five essentials cover most business sites: an SEO plugin (Rank Math), a security plugin (Wordfence or our own 365i Performance Optimizer), a backup plugin (UpdraftPlus or All-in-One WP Migration), a contact form plugin (Gravity Forms or WPForms), and a caching plugin (WP Rocket or our 365i Performance Optimizer). Beyond those five, only add what you specifically need.
Yes. We build bespoke WordPress plugins when an off-the-shelf solution doesn't exist or doesn't fit. Common examples include API integrations with CRMs or accounting software, custom post types with custom fields, booking systems, and membership functionality. See our <a href="/services/wordpress-development/">WordPress development service</a> for details.
Our four free plugins (365i Performance Optimizer, AI Discovery Files, 365i Queue Optimizer, and 365i Environment Indicator) were built to solve real problems we hit on client sites. Releasing them on WordPress.org gives back to the community that built WordPress in the first place. It also gives every site we host on 365i a meaningful performance and visibility advantage out of the box.
